Come Hell or High Water - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Come Hell or High Water

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem;”
(Luke 9:51, NASU)

Strong-willed, adamant, purposeful, “will take no for an answer” are just a few descriptive words used for the saying, “Come hell or high water.” I tried finding out where this saying was first spoken, but couldn’t get much from my online search.

It was probably declared by John Wayne back in the prime time years for movies, when he saddled up his mighty steed to rescue a fair maiden from the hands of cattle rustlers. Or it could have been Robin Hood, in the pursuit of his beloved Maid Marian. Maybe Rocky Balboa said it before his first boxing match in Philly? Most likely it was proclaimed even before his time.

I can imagine an American Marine, just before landing on Normandy beach for D-Day back on June 6, 1994, yelling it to his fellow buddies, wanting to just finish that awful World War II.

Nonetheless, whoever declared his determination to get the job done, no matter what the cost, certainly had to have courage and fortitude.

Jesus knew what the cost would be, when His Father commissioned Him to become as a man, to save us from sin and eternal damnation in hell. A real mission, needing a real Savior, to deliver us from a real hell. Being He knows all and sees all, back then, now and forever, He did what it took to get the job done. There was no backing down from accomplishing His goal.

I admire the courage of Ruth, who did what her heart had purposed to do, when her mother-in-law suggested otherwise, about turning back to her homeland.

“But Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge.

Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. "Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the Lord do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me."

When she saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more to her.”
(Ruth 1:16-18, NASU)

We must determine in our hearts to do what is right, before we are put on the spot requiring a decision. We must make it clear in our own minds that when the Lord calls upon us to do something, we will not sit back, debate it within ourselves and with others, or think His word is for another person, at another place, or for another time. We are living in the days when our stand for truth must withstand the onslaught of the enemy, who presses forward to take us down.

Today, courage and strength are both much needed in the lives of believers around the world. We have a prime target on our backs, and our enemy, the devil and his wretched demons, have come from hell, bent on killing us. He hates Jesus, therefore he hates those who call themselves His disciples and followers.

Come hell or high water, by His grace we will stand.
And stand we must.

This is who we are called to be - witnesses for the Most High God, testifying of His goodness, His redemptive plan, and the salvation that is found only in the saving power in His pure blood, shed mercifully on the cross for all who will call upon His Name. With Him as our solid rock on which we stand, it is our God, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who will bring us through to the end.

Believe it, and carry on.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).
