Only the Beginning - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Only the Beginning

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“The end of something is better than its beginning, so the patient are better than the proud.” (Ecclesiastes 7:8, Complete Jewish Bible)

There are times the Lord will give me a word that I “hear” in my head, and I know He has something for me to share in writing. At other times I will ask Him for a word, and then He tells me. This time He gave me the words, “Only the beginning.”

Now I know that that is in the lyrics of the song Beginnings, sung by the band Chicago in the 1970’s. But I don’t think it has anything to do with that. I believe there is something else the Lord wants to speak at this time.

My sense is that there are some of us, myself included at times, who may think our “assignment”, whether it be on a job, in a particular situation we have been in for a period, or even near the completion of this life, is done. We get the feeling that it is over, the season has passed, and now it is time to move on. For some it may be we are wanting it over, out of discouragement or disappointment. We may really hope it is.

That may be true. That aspect of your life, or mine, may be done. But it does not mean that our long term purpose and plan of the Lord is over. It may be it is only the beginning of something new; the next challenge we are to face and be as a conqueror in and through it. We may be close to finishing the one assignment. We have gone through it in preparation for the next.

When I meditate on the ways of the Lord, and read of His actions in the many lives of the biblical characters, I find peace and hope that He fully knows the beginning and the end for each of us. As we put our trust in Him, we can be certain that what may have been seen as bad will prove in the end to be good.

The Word does say clearly, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.” (Romans 8:28-30, NASU)

When I consider the works of His hands, such as how a mountain stream begins as a small trickle and gathers momentum as it works its way down the slope, I am confident of this. Those things which may seem unimportant at first, due to lack of size or notice, will one day be the full, finished product the Maker had in mind all along.

Look at how many times a large corporation “started off in the garage” of its founder.

Whether you are hoping to finish something now in your life, and glad it is almost over, or just beginning something new, be reassured that the Lord has promised to be with you every step along the way. In good and in bad, in sickness and in health, our Bridegroom will remain steadfast to see us through. He has promised to be there, from the beginning to the end.

Doubt & Unbelief - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Doubt & Unbelief

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“Let's keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word.
(Hebrews 10:23, THE MESSAGE)

Opportunities abound in this present age to doubt the Word of God, to let go of the written Word and let unbelief take hold.

Popular opinions, so backed up with the latest national polls, would tempt to steal away that which has been rooted in our mind and spirit, long taught to be the truth. The everlasting truth. Pushing hard against the bedrock of historical fact, the winds of change and roaring waters beat constantly as they seek to destroy that which has been held sacred.

No doubt, doubt and unbelief scheme to take over what we know to be the truth.

What many now say is truth, based on the contemporary news and the desires of the people, are put forth to dismiss the facts revealed centuries ago. Just keep saying the same thing long enough and enough people will believe it. Thus it must make it true. It must be that the previous generations just had it wrong, and therefore we must modernize our thinking and update our beliefs. How often have you heard that?

What a bunch of hog wash. (I was raised in Iowa, where pigs like to get real dirty in the slime and mud.)

When presented with the notion that Jesus (Yeshua) was not raised from the dead, there is more than enough proof, just from that historical period of time, to dismiss whatever is thrown out as otherwise. Written words, eyewitnesses onsite, and changed lives after His crucifixion stand as bedrock proof of what He said would happen, and then did happen.

His resurrection from the dead completely backs up His words spoken prior, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?"  She said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world." (John 11:25-27, NASU)

What is the most important foundational truth of believers, who have committed to receive and bear witness of the truth in their own lives, remains that solid rock upon which we stand. Jesus came, was born of a virgin, confirmed the words of the prophets of old, lived a sinless life, was crucified, dead, buried and rose again, to eternally bear witness to the gospel truth. Doubt and unbelief must go when presented with the firm facts that the written words of Torah and the complete Bible present. Nothing and no one will ever be able to deny for any length of time this eternal fact.

When the times get tough, and the onslaught of the evil one presses hard against us, as believers we can always stand on His truth, fight the good fight of faith, and continue to commit our lives to the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Yeshua HaMashiach. When the temptation to waver in doubt and unbelief comes our way, it is by His grace and mercy we shall stand strong and live to see our eternal reward in heaven. The truth has set us free. The truth will bring us to the final destination.

This is not just a seasonal word for us. This is the Eternal Word that completely solidifies our everlasting life.

“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14, NKJV)

Faith and belief in Jesus will always be the only way. Salvation is found in no other.

Refreshment - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Refreshment

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“For I satisfy the weary ones and refresh everyone who languishes." (Jeremiah 31:25, NASU)

We strive very hard to get refreshed. After a long, hard day at work or in the home, or once we have completed a difficult task that we dreaded and fretted about for days or longer is done, we seek to get refreshed in mind, spirit and body. Be it by watching the latest movie blockbuster, our favorite weekly TV show on the DVR, or just sitting on the front porch during a cool, spring day, if the neighbor isn’t mowing his yard, we seek refreshment. It is something that is necessary.

A popular saying in church sermons the past few years has been “getting our batteries recharged.” Though that seems a little crude to me, I get it. Daily grinds wear us out – we may be giving more than receiving - and recovering from them is important. Without regular refreshings, we would get burned out fast.

I recall the many Scriptures telling the times when Jesus would get alone, pray, and tap into the strength His Father gave Him each time He did. With the multitudes pressing in on Him throughout His daily teaching and ministry, He knew the importance of that time, and I would be certain He most appreciated it when He took that time.

“After he had sent the crowds away, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night came on, and he was there alone.” (Matthew 14:23, Complete Jewish Bible)

Our mind needs refreshing. Our body certainly needs refreshing. Most critical of all – our spirit needs refreshing. With the spiritual forces coming at us from all directions, seeking to “steal, kill and destroy”, we need to have our spirit given a daily boost with the grace and enthused power of the Holy Spirit.

For myself, morning prayer allows the Lord the time to prepare me for the day ahead. Praying in the spirit builds up and replenishes the weary soul. Throughout the day, maybe at a lunch break, I will quietly pray in tongues, particularly as I sense a burden needing attention.

“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.” (Jude 20-21, NASU)

However you get refreshed, I urge you to have the quiet time you’ve so often meant to experience, but kept putting it off. You will find that when you give that a priority, strength for the rest will be more known. You’ll be thankful you do.
