“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34, NKJV)
“It's obvious, isn't it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.” (Luke 12:34, THE MESSAGE)
It is obvious, isn’t it? What you spend your time on, your money for, or your hopes in is what matters to you. Be it the time put in on the job, the money spent for entertaining ourselves, or the pursuit of dreams based on hopes, one can tell what treasures each of us are pursing.
Be it for now, in this life, or the next one.
Yeshua (Jesus) said it very clearly, as found in the Bible verses quoted by Matthew in 6:19-22, when it comes to His thoughts on wealth, involving our time and how we spend it. “Do not store up for yourselves wealth here on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and burglars break in and steal. Instead, store up for yourselves wealth in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and burglars do not break in or steal. For where your wealth is, there your heart will be also.” (Complete Jewish Bible)
Many live for the here and now, having the “get it while you can” philosophy. “Eat, drink and be merry” is a centuries old lifestyle. History shows the results in the lives of those who gave themselves to that.
The Lord also spoke clearly when He told us of those having that type of heart and frame of mind within them.
“And He told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man was very productive. "And he began reasoning to himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' "Then he said, 'This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry."'
"But God said to him, ' You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?' "So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." (Luke 12:16-21 NASU)
From time to time we need to stop and consider what it is we are living for. Is it for the happiness in this life and the comfort we can find here, or are we doing as the Lord told us to do, to be “rich toward God”? If we check our check book or the time we spend in our “spare” time, we will know. Have you done that lately?
Days, months and years are going by. When we look back at how we spent our life, and then compare it to what we know the Lord would have had us do, how will we stand up? Will we have spiritual fruit to present to Him? Or will we have our heads down, realizing what a waste it was in how we spent the time and money the way we did?
In order to live for the Lord and His plans, we need to have a vision for the eternal. Without one, all we will ever live for is the next paycheck, the upcoming weekend, the thrill or agony of a sporting event. How will that hold up before the throne of God, when we each take our turn before Him. Will it be burnt up in cinders, or will we receive a shining crown of glory?
The decisions we make today will decide the results tomorrow.
Make wise choices based on His choice for you. And if you don’t know what those are, now would be a good time to start asking.
So think on this, in the love of Jesus,
