Expectations - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Expectations
- Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.” Col. 3:2-4 NASU

Expectations come and go, rise and fall, and can be fulfilled or left hanging as we press forward. We experience different levels of expectations during our lifetime, as we seek to know the will of our Father, Who knows all and desires to see us walk in His way. Along that way, each of us will be given the opportunity to learn to trust in Him, expecting His promises and purposes to come about as He has said. Often that trust and faith in Him is tested, even as disappointments and setbacks occur.

In times past I have been told that my expectations were too high, that I need not hope as much as I did. Most often it was because I was looking at people to bring about a certain fulfillment in my dreams, rather than the Lord Himself. There had been opportunities to experience something different and new, but when circumstances or the people I looked to did not bring about the expected result I was hoping for, I had to guard my heart from disappointment and press hard into the Father’s heart for an answer.

At times it was not easy. At times it seemed that I had gone as far as I would or could go, and really didn’t want to believe again for a better result. The temptation was to settle for things as they were, and be content with that. But we all know that that doesn’t bring fulfillment, does it?

After spending another time slowly re-reading the biblical story of Joseph and his expectations, and the resulting situations, I once again became encouraged to trust that the Lord does redeem our times and seasons. It is though in His time. Those pits and prisons are real. But also the release and triumph can be just as real. It becomes a matter of time for His plan to become reality for us.

As we hear or read of others who have gone before with their life stories, we realize that they too had to overcome the disappointments, the failures of oneself and others, the unfulfilled expectations that they had placed their hope in. They had to daily press on, to push forward, to contend for the prize set before them, in order to gain the higher ground. It was a battle, in an even great spiritual war.

In Isaiah 40:30-31 the Word says, “Young men may grow tired and weary, even the fittest may stumble and fall; but those who hope in Adonai will renew their strength, they will soar aloft as with eagles’ wings; when they are running they won’t grow weary, when they are walking they won’t get tired.” Complete Jewish Bible

Whether young or old, we must keep our hope in Adonai, our Savior, in order to renew our strength. When anticipated expectations do not come about as we had hoped, once again we must stand on the foundation He has laid. Once again we must experience His renewal, His uplifting of our wings, as we run the race set before us. Though we will become weary and tired, He will not fail us in our journey.

No More Restraints? - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

No More Restraints?
- Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way.” 2 Thess. 2:6-8 NASU

The walls are falling down. Many of the restraints we formerly could count on, which have been holding back the onslaught of the evil one as they had been in place over the centuries, are no longer there.

Almost anything is allowed now, as people and governments are using all excuses to serve their own purposes. Often it is heard, “We must be sensitive to others”, or “stop pushing your own agenda or beliefs on us.” It would seem that all situations are ok, as there is no longer any fear of paying a price for sin, no matter how large or small. After all, some would think, no longer is there a need for accountability to anyone or anything having rules, regulations or set guidelines. We are “free to let it all go and do our own thing.”

According to many, there are no longer any restraints that would or should guide us anymore. The concept of sin went out the door decades ago. With a common misconception that one can be called a Christian by just saying you are one, the thought of a God who would judge people is labeled as old school. Why therefore need we adhere to the Ten Commandments or any Scripture? We took those down off the court room walls decades ago, after all.

There used to be a time when at least you could hear, even in mainline churches, good, solid teaching on standards, as they held the ground on what was permissible and what wasn’t. Now, due to the fear of political correctness or attacks from the other side, speaking Bible truth has been so watered down that young kids have no idea what really is right or wrong. The standards have been so lowered that what we once upheld and stood strong on have now been tossed aside, replaced by ungodly standards and immoral judgments. Deception abounds.

Even certain nationally observed days, with foundations from evil origins themselves, have become some of the most celebrated in our countries. Indeed, the ever increasing temperature rise in the frog’s captive water has gone up so high, whereby the “frog” is now being boiled alive, not even realizing the impending result. But death will actually result.

Parents raising kids are confronted daily with sound waves of how all the others are doing it, how it will be alright to give in a little, and why not to be so tough on allowing your kids to explore and try new ways. Weariness takes its toll on those attempting to hold the line, while struggling to stop the onslaught from coming into the home daily from every which way.

So what do we do? Give up and give in? Tell ourselves that the world is going to hell anyway, so just let it happen?

In speaking to those of us who are of the current parental generation, we are called upon by our Lord to stand, even as others around us would give in. We are the ones who must be the lighthouse to those who have lost their way. We must be the “Bible” to those who have never been instructed in the Way, or shown the Truth, or heard of the Life in Jesus Christ.

“Refuse to follow the devil. Stand strong in your faith. You know that your brothers and sisters all over the world are having the same sufferings that you have. 1 Peter 5:9

“So, brothers and sisters, stand strong and continue to believe the teachings we gave you when we were there and by letter.” 2 Thess. 2:15

I know I grow weary at times, with the frequent temptations, the short term victories of the ungodly, and the continuing battle to keep my mind on the Lord and His ways. But I know for the sake of my family, my grandkids, and others who are watching and listening, I, along with you, must hold the line. We must stand for truth, righteousness and accountability.

Be encouraged in the Lord’s strength. Spend the time daily to be uplifted by His Word, His answers to prayers, and His light that does shine in the darkness. Our promised reward awaits us in the end.

No Names - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

No Names
- Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed; and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.” Rev. 21:25-27 NASU

It had been almost two months since I had written a NOW THINK ON THIS article. In fact, when I started writing this one I didn’t even have a title, so I just started out calling it “No Name.” Come to find out that is what it ended up being, in plurality though.

Over this period of summer time, from mid-July to the first day of September, the days had been long as time moved forward. During those days, my wife’s Mom, Lorraine, had passed on at the age of 92 to her eternal reward. Other than that, it seemed nothing significant had occurred that directly affected our immediate lives here in North Carolina, or so one might think. Almost daily newscasts reported on Israel protecting her citizens and eliminating some Hamas terrorists in Gaza (though you had to get news from Israel itself to get it reported accurately); Russia seemed to be lying about its involvement in Ukraine; and the USA continued on its downward path socially and economically, that a good portion of its citizens haven’t eyes to see. Only our Lord has the complete wisdom and understanding as to what it all means, where it is going, and how exactly this age will be fulfilled in His plans and purposes.

Through all of this, many well-known people have been spoken of or written about. In considering those names whom the world highlights, with their feats of glory in government, sports, education, entertainment, religion or science, it makes me think of the millions whom we never hear about, who live or had lived “normal” lives, rarely seen or heard outside their immediate family and friends, and yet whom the Lord considers as friends for the relationship they have (or had before their passing) with Him.

My wife Laurie likes to read the daily obituaries printed in the Charlotte Observer delivered to our home. I have questioned her interest in this a few times, thinking of it personally as a waste of time, to read of the deaths of those in our city and nearby towns. But then again, as we value the lives of those the Lord has created, these “no names” in my life are among the many who have impacted the lives of kin, work places, and realms they walked in while living. Hopefully many of them lived the life their Creator had intended – to be fruitful, multiply, and demonstrate His love. Hopefully they knew the Lord Jesus as their personal Savior and Lord, and now also abide with Him. Time will tell us. By now they know for themselves.

Looking back over 60 years of life, I believe I treasured the desire in my heart, of wanting to make my life count, of hearing what the Lord had created for me to do, and then doing it. He has certainly taken me down many roads, both physically and spiritually, that I would not have expected. I also believe that when the roll is called up yonder and the Book of Life is opened, that the life led here on planet Earth will have had an impact beyond what my natural eyes have seen. I too would hope that the ripple effect of obedience will have touched others enough to have caused them to look to the One seated on the throne, for faith, hope and love.

Many “no names” are doing what they know to do – in serving the needs of those around them; raising families in an environment hostile against Scriptural marriages; working a noble job the best they know how; and giving to their fellow mankind a part of the Father’s heart – doing so while living their daily life. We may never hear their name broadcast on the local or national news, printed in the town newspaper, or going viral on the social media, but He Who is All Knowing knows their name, and is ready to give them their reward at that appointed time.

I may not start reading the obituaries, but next time I do hear of someone “famous” dying and their feats glorified, I will think of the many who also left their body here that day, unreported by most accounts, and whom the majority of us will never hear about. But when I meet them in heaven, where true eternal deeds will be revealed, having passed through the testing fire, I will marvel at the impact they certainly had, doing what they were gifted to do. They certainly will be honored and cherished more than what they ever dreamed of, as they stand before the Lamb, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, and their names in the Book of Life are called off. The “no names” will have shared His Name.

“Then I looked, and there was the Lamb standing on Mount Tziyon; and with him were 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.” Rev. 14:1-2 Complete Jewish Bible

Perspective - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Perspective
- Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, lest the righteous reach out their hands to iniquity. Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts. As for such as turn aside to their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them away.” Psalm 125:1-5 NKJV

Walter Cronkite, the evening news anchor for CBS Evening News, from 1962-1981, would end his reporting broadcast with the usual words, “And that’s the way it is.” Walter was trusted by most Americans because he gave the news without adding his perspective or slant to a newsworthy segment. He did the reporting, not the commentary.

In this decade I listen to several news broadcasts, observing and listening as to how they report the news. Several you know in advance will have a slanted perspective, wanting to persuade the viewing audience to their analysis of incidents being broadcast, giving the listeners words and photo/video clips that would present their side of the story, whether that side is the actual truth or it has been given an added edge to it.

In this hour that we live, common news items, including those of moral issues, are often given airtime and presented in a way to influence the thinking of the viewers. Intentional commentaries, or giving sound bites of what the newscaster wants their audience to hear, never will tell the full story in the time permitted. With this accepted format, what one sees and hears is then received as the full truth, without question. If the viewer has little or no knowledge of the subject presented, it becomes the “way it is” and accepted as the complete truth of that story.

Worldwide newscasts and reporting of events surrounding the small nation of Israel have become more and more slanted, as newsgroups and reporters have already gone into a situation, knowing how they want to portray the situation. Their intent is to make whatever response or action Israel takes to be as the aggressor and the bad guy. Having a pre-conceived attitude that the response Israel employs is one of offense rather than defense, the news reporting will convey to their audience that Israel is the wrongful country.

As these past 60 plus years of the current state of Israel have gone by, whenever the government of Israel has responded to the intended actions of their surrounding neighbors to destroy them, the worldwide perspective has been to blame Israel as the aggressor, the offender, the ones who created the act of war and should be held accountable for the resulting actions. It seems as if the other side, the one whom history can and will prove to be the instigator, has done no wrong.

Recently Israel’s acts of defense are reported as if those killed in their rightful response are totally innocent, having nothing to do with the actions of their own elected governments. We are given the impression that Israel has no regard for the lives of the assaulting country’s civilians, and ruthlessly slaughters whomever and destroys whatever they want.

A full and clear look at the situation will tell the exact and proper truth.

When a government in power uses hospitals, mosques and civilian homes to store and fire rockets at Israel, and then commands their own citizens to stand in and around these buildings, knowing the rightful response is to destroy the destroyer, the terrible pictures of the civilians killed will be what makes the news airtime, causing the world to loudly object to the war actions of Israel’s IDF (Israel Defense Force). Little is questioned as to why any legitimate government would put their own citizens in harms way, knowing any just response from the other nation would be to destroy such targets used against them to kill and destroy.

If America, Canada, Europe, or any other country was continually fired upon by another nation, seeking to destroy it and its people, the proper response would be to fight back, and take out that which is doing the intentional action of wanting to annihilate your country. That is the right response any country would do. That is what should be presented and broadcast in truth to the world, as in this case for Israel too.

We commend Israel for warning the citizens of the attacking country via cell phone calls, leaflets dropped from the air, and other means of notifying them prior to attacking the ammunition storages of the enemy. What other nation in historical wartime has done that, with the effort to prevent civilian casualties?

Rather that portraying Israel as the aggressor and the offender, we should be hearing of them justifiably protecting their civilians from the killing and destruction that their enemies have vowed to do to them. They have spoken loud and clear that this is their ultimate purpose for Israel – for complete destruction, until only they have all the land.

But the God of Israel has other plans. And He is protecting His people in their Land. We stand with them too.

New Shoes - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

New Shoes
- Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“And no one puts new wine in old wineskins; if he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine is for freshly prepared wineskins.” Mark 2:22 CJB

I put on my new pair of work dress shoes recently. At first they felt over tight, uncomfortable, and squeezed my big toe into the corner spot so much that it couldn’t wiggle if it wanted to. They just didn’t fit right, as I thought they would once home, after that brief moment I tried them on at the store, just before I picked out an extra pair of gray socks, and the loaf of whole wheat bread my wife asked for as I went out the door.

But then that was last month. Today, after wearing them and having “broken them in”, they are just like my favorite old pair that I had to throw out, due to wear and tear after seven years.

If you think about it for a moment, it is like a new job, a new home setup, a new car (even if the new one is just a little younger than the previous one), or anything we now have that is different than what we had become used to. Until we gave it some time to work out the kinks and the normal, uncomfortable newness, which we had really appreciated with the old that we had, it didn’t feel right, or as good as the previous one. But having given it some time to grow on us, it surely does now. It has become even better than what we had before.

When the Holy Spirit brings revival again, knowing He certainly has promised to do so, as written in His Word for these last days, it will not be what we are used to. In fact, He may even get rejected by the old guard as He did when He came in previous visitations, as the experiences are not what we have now become accustomed to, since the last time of touching this planet in a major way.

“You are not from these parts, are you?” could be the response of some who look on from a distance, upon that which will be going on. Ruach HaKodesh, and those He has put new wine into, could easily be dismissed as just having another emotional experience or fanatic outburst, as the new movement overshadows the previous ones from the Pentecostal decades, the healing years, or the last, great Charismatic Movement I was involved with in the ‘70’s and onward.

This coming revival, effecting the nations with the powerful Good News of salvation, healing and the love of the Father God, will so impact people, that the new wine will cause the old to be done away with, replaced with a fresh fullness that we didn’t think could, or would, happen again. Because we had not seen it before, it will transform our lives in such a way that we will boldly face the enemy, confidently proclaim the Gospel, and tear down the walls that have surrounded the cozy churches, keeping us from effecting the world as we have been called to do.

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Mark 16:15 NASU

We will be getting out of the pew and into the pasture, going where the lost sheep are throughout the world. Some are even right next to us in the office desk, or the one occupying the white house down the street.

Those blinded by the spiritual forces of Islam, Hinduism, secular humanism, “sexual freedom” and other lies of the enemy will be set free, as the Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshua HaMashiach, moves in to break the bondages and strongholds that have ravaged the nations we have been called to be in and shine throughout.

As the old pair of shoes has worn out, it is time to get on a new pair. They will feel uncomfortable at first, but once our feet adjust to them, by His grace working within us, they will take us to places we had only dreamed of going before.

I am looking forward to this next revival outpouring movement of the Lord and His Holy Spirit, to bring it on and get us going.

Thank you Lord for new shoes!

Expressions & Diversity - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Expressions & Diversity
- Now Think On This
by Steve Martin

“For just as there are many parts that compose one body, but the parts don’t all have the same function; so there are many of us, and in union with the Messiah we comprise one body, with each of us belonging to the others. But we have gifts that differ and which are meant to be used according to the grace that has been given to us.” Romans 12:4-6 CJB

Walking down any city street, especially in a major urban area, you see all kinds of people. In Charlotte, North Carolina’s uptown, or Center City as some would call it, you can also observe many nationalities – those from India, Africa, Southeast Asia, China, South America, and of course different sections of America. (I know this due to the Anglo-Saxon ancestral accents I hear!) Personally, I love them all.

In the business office I work at in uptown Charlotte, as the Accountant since 2012, we regularly have interns who come for the summer months. Some of them are still in college, while others have just completed their upper level education and are ready to hit the marketplace. They just haven’t gotten hired quite yet, so this will look good on their resume.

Often we have a wide diversity of these young “millennials”, those in the 20’s age group. They have come to serve with us from different Carolina colleges, having diverse cultural and societal backgrounds. This particular summer we have some whose grandparents were from China, India and Scotland. Each one brings a specific skill, knowledge base, and educational training, which are used to enhance the labor force the company already has. Having them around certainly drops the average age of the staff, at least for these few months.

It amazes me how diverse the Lord has created mankind. From every tribe, nation and group He has delighted Himself with such a rainbow of colors, languages and gifts. One country’s people may be advanced in mathematics, while another is known for their agricultural products. Some nations specialize in manufacturing, and some in high adventure, using their natural resources for the excitement and enjoyment of their visitors.

Can you imagine if we were all Anglo-Saxon Americans, or all Chinese, or possibly everyone was an African? In my perspective I would find that quite boring. I think that is why the Lord God of Israel created so many features, colors, talents and skills that each one possesses. Though twins are very close to being exactly alike, the wide variety of men, women and children are not, and it is awesome. What a creative God there is!

It has been a true blessing to have had friends from different backgrounds and genealogies. In travelling to foreign countries, and meeting new friends, I am very appreciate of the various cultures each has developed, with their amazing foods, clothing styles, and personalities. It is simply the work of the great God we know and serve.

As people express the various skills, talents and gifts they have, I encourage you to appreciate and respect that which each one offers to the world, for each is made in the image of our God, and has a specific purpose in God’s eternal plan. Accepting the wide variety of expressions, with multifunction and diversities, will bring more joy and thanksgiving in our lives for who they are, and what we can share together.

Give thanks to the Lord for His extravagant creation!
