Choose Wisely - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Choose Wisely

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“The wisdom of the wise keeps life on track; the foolishness of fools lands them in the ditch.” (Proverbs 14:8, THE MESSAGE)

Have you ever gone down a wrong way, thinking at the time it was the right way, and end up somewhere you wish you hadn’t? Whether it be a road, a choice in life or a decision made hurriedly to avoid making another one, only to find out later it was just the wrong decision.

I have. And I have had to pay a price for it.

Sometimes it cost time. Other occasions it cost money. And then even at a more hurtful occurrence, it cost a relationship. Many times the wrong can’t be undone and you live with the pain and hurt for many years. Try as you might, there are repercussions to our actions that have to be walked out.

When I consider a lost relationship between friends, one that had taken years to build, I find myself trusting once again in the goodness of the Lord, after seeking forgiveness and reconciliation with them, ending with no positive results. Our times are in His hands, and we must trust that His restoration hopefully will come at some point.

There is one choice that many continue to decide to do, and that is to walk day by day without giving one’s life to the Lord’s plan and purpose for oneself. To me, that would be unthinkable. To go through this life choosing to do our own thing, without thought or consideration of having the Creator, the very One who created each of us, be unable to reveal His ultimate desire for our life because of our choosing not to let Him. To ignore His longing to give us the future and the hope promised to each, if only we freely choose to let Him in, would indeed be tragic. And yet many choose the unthinkable and do just that.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive.” (Jeremiah 29:11-14, NKJV)

No one person, family or country can long seek their own way and reap the ultimate results of goodness without the love of God working through them. All around us we can see the lasting effects of those who have gone before us, choosing to live as one sang decades ago, “I did it my way.” And where did that get you?

Our lifelong choices not only affect our ending but decisions we make ripple down through those who follow behind us, possibly making the same mistakes as they too walk in our footsteps.

When I was in my late 20’s I heard a message from the pulpit, when the leader of the church gathering told us that choices we make today will have a long-lasting effect decades down the road. If we make the decision to go one way, ultimately we will possibly end up way off the mark, and the only way to get back on the right road would be to go back to that point and choose the right one. It is called repentance.

In my walk with the Lord, I considered this word quite often, and sought to have the Holy Spirit give me clarity and insight as to which road to choose each time I came to a fork in the road. Many times it wasn’t the easy choice, or the “multitudes” choice, but it was the Lord’s choice. To this day I can say I am very thankful for His guidance and direction He has certainly given.

My prayer is that today, when you are faced with a decision that will impact your life for years to come, that you will not depend on your own insights, your own feelings, or what is the “likely” choice, but that you will seek the roadmap the Lord already knows about and has laid out before you were born, and which we can know – through His Word and by receiving godly counsel from others. And then walk in faith no matter what the cost may be. It will affect not only your eternity but others around you.

We all have been given a free will, but we also have been given God’s Word, His Holy Spirit, and the fellowship of believers to help guide us.

Choose wisely.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

For the Love of God - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

For the Love of God

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:3 NASU)

For the love of God we are called to do what we do. Mostly that is to give our life for others, even as the Lord Jesus Himself demonstrated it – by showing us how to do it as He gave His life for us. In walking daily in the leading of the Holy Spirit, and choosing to let go of His natural pleasures in order to do what He came to do, He gave His life.

So when the nudge came to wake up from the night’s sleep, and get out of bed, even though the red numbers on the digital clock read 5:08 am, a bit before my normal rising time these days, I dismissed the urge to lay there, and got up. And I knew why.

The night before someone had shared with me some of their struggles and concerns from that day. And as we all so often do, we allow worry and fears of the future to sometimes rob us of the faith and assurance of the times ahead. Sure, we know the verse, “My times are in Your hands…” (Psalm 31:5), but at times it doesn’t seem to be as strongly settled in our spirit as we would like it to be. We let the certainties be not as certain.

After getting up, getting dressed, and going downstairs, I said to them that I wanted to pray for them before they left for work. A simple prayer for peace, assurance, and trust in the Lord’s guidance – to know once again that their times were in His hands.

I believe it was a meaningful action, both for them and myself. Encouragement can come in many ways. I trust my obedience would bring the results the Lord intended, and the love of God He wanted to be expressed to them had been.

Bearing one another’s burdens is part of the calling we each have who call upon the Name of the Lord. Being there for each other, in good times and not so good, helps the encouragement level in our spirits to be a bit higher than walking it out alone. And so we do these things, as acts of faith and obedience.

We can daily stand on the promise given to us in His Word. When life gets hard, we can always trust in Him.

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-39, NKJV)

For the love of God will keep us until the end. We encourage each other with His words.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).

Christopher Wants A Baby; Catherine Wants A Cookie - Now Think On This by Steve Martin

Christopher Wants A Baby;
Catherine Wants A Cookie

Now Think On This
Steve Martin

“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”
(Psalms 37:4, NKJV)

“Christopher wants a baby; Catherine wants a cookie.”

Have you ever dreamed of such a thing? Weird, huh? But I have, and I still am not sure what exactly it means, if in only partiality. I can speculate and then draw my own conclusion – the man wants one thing while the woman in the relationship wants another. Happens all the time, right?

Really, I did dream this recently, and have been asking the Lord what it is supposed to convey. I know there are multiple times when two people may want different things, as even a man and a woman in marriage do. The one’s desire may seem lofty and admirable, while the other’s may seem trivial. Our concepts and perceptions certainly do not always agree in relationships, and yet we are called to pursue love and understanding in them.

When I consider this dream I would almost think that it is backwards – that Catherine would be the one who wants a baby, granting her a God-given desire for motherhood, while Christopher, where in today’s society considers men to be weak, babyish, selfish and egotistical, would be content with just having a cookie. His choice would not be a life-long commitment to raising a child as unto the Lord, but to have a cookie in place of it, with more selfish desires that follow. Kind of like being satisfied with getting a bowl of soup when one is hungry in exchange for giving your natural birthright away.

Sounds like Jacob and Esau.

“When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished; and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom. But Jacob said, " First sell me your birthright." Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?" And Jacob said, " First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.” (Genesis 25:29-34, NASU)

But let’s just for a moment give this guy in the dream, Christopher, a little slack, and believe he really wants to be responsible man, raise a family, and lead both wife and child(ren) into the ways of the Lord. Let’s also give it a real possibility that there are indeed other men out there who are wanting to do the same. (I personally know of two close to me, right now, who would love to have a wife, desiring both of them to then live for the Lord in marriage. It has been a real struggle for them as they wait on the Lord, for a woman to come along who also desires this type of relationship, and not one who would just be content with having a “cookie”.)

Before our society totally loses it, when it comes to a man and woman being solidly joined together in a godly marriage, giving of each other to each other, and then bringing forth children to care for and raising up to bless the Lord and their parents, my prayer is that the “Christophers” out there, who desire to have a scared relationship, are indeed given that opportunity in finding a “Catherine” who too desires more than a “cookie”, and is willing to also lay her life down in order to realize the blessing the Lord still grants upon the union of one man and one wife, living for Him and His purposes.

My dream may not be so weird after all.

Shalom and ahava (peace and love in Hebrew).
